Rapping to Recover
Living a life filled with trauma isn’t exactly classified as easy. Yet this is a commonality in the ghetto, a shared experience of those that were raised in austere or poor living conditions. Trauma is hard to escape when your parents were raised in similar or worse circumstances. It seems to be a cycle that repeats itself inter generationally. Although easy to access, counselling is not always the go-to for those that are traumatized. So where do we turn to when we feel that nobody understands our pain and struggle?Â
Hearing Music can be Healing
Have you ever felt some type of way and turned on your playlist of music and heard music that relates to exactly what you feel? It’s almost as if you feel understood for a moment and that person making that song has felt exactly what you’re going through at that moment. The beautiful thing about music is that a lot of it has come from emotional experiences, and those of us that do not trust people or have a hard time discussing what we are going through with people, find our therapy from listening to music.Â
Making Music Mitigates Misery
Imagine that you were a young child raised in a household filled with abuse, isolation, neglect and addict parent. Now imagine how hard it would be to trust, communicate, or manage your emotions. Most likely, unless some kind of counselling or therapy was involved, that person has trouble talking about how they feel and probably doesn’t feel, although probably has a desire to feel, understood. The most beautiful music comes from a place of people that sing/rap from their hearts. What an amazing feeling it must be to not have to think about whose listening or feel pressured to talk or have a time limit to speak, to just project how you feel on your own time, in your own space and in your own way. Music is an amazing journey from ones heart, and exploration into their mind.Â
